With the weather getting chilly, it’s so easy to snuggly up, stay warm and eat warm goodies to our heart’s desire. It makes sense why we can easily get off track with our eating habits considering all of the holidays and (at least for me) mashed potatoes galore!! Here are some tips and tricks to help you stay on top of your eating habits to try your best to not look like a marshmallow come spring!
If you can’t read it, don’t eat it
So many foods that we consume are processed and contain so much more fat than you think. A good friend suggested this “If you can’t read it, don’t eat it” tip to me, and it is the easiest way to stay on top of your eating habits. I don’t know about you, but I most definitely can say everything that’s in broccoli (it’s just broccoli in case you were wondering). But in a delicious bag of doritos? It contains; dextrose, disodium inosinate, and disodium guanylate (what the heck are these???) I’m sure you could google it to figure it out, but it’s best to just stay away.
Swap sugary foods for sweet root veggies and soups
Sometimes the winter months can make us reach for sugar-laden ‘comfort foods’ that can be bad for both our waistline and our energy levels. However, there are lots of winter foods that are nutritious and comforting – try roasted root vegetables which are delicious and sweet, or soups packed with vegetables are great for lunchtime, especially with lots of garlic or ginger.
Try eating something small before holiday parties
With cold weather comes holiday parties filled with delicious foods. Prepare yourself to eat healthy by filling up on something healthy before you leave home. Eating a small salad or an apple beforehand will curb your hunger, and help you make better decisions with your food. When attending parties, you can also volunteer to bring a healthy dish. That way you’ll know there’s at least one healthy thing you can eat.
