The Oscars are a major night for Hollywood and the film industry. In fact, it can be a pretty big night for people attending through their televisions too, as some people love to have Oscar watch parties.
Each year at the Oscars, celebrities and their plus-ones dress to impress as they walk down the red carpet and celebrate the last years successful films and the people who made those films possible, as well as remember those who couldn’t be there.
The ceremony was an eventful night. In case you weren’t able to watch the award ceremony live, here are the top 5 things we can’t stop talking about from Oscar night.
- Several people were missing from the “In Memoriam” segment
The internet had a fit over Beverly Hills, 90210 and Riverdale star Luke Perry and Disney Channel star Cameron Boyce’s absence in the “In Memoriam” part of the show, but there were dozens of stars missing from the heartfelt segment. But, all names of those who passed are on the Oscars website, and will be there until next year.
- No women were nominated for Best Director
In the past, the Oscars have been criticized for their lack of acknowledging successful females and celebrities have called them out on it, along with calling out sexism in the film industry in general. Although no women were nominated for Best Director, women nominated for other categories, and in total made up about 1/3 of the nominees.
- Natalie Portman wore a cape with names of female directors embroidered into it
Natalie Portman is known for calling out the film industry for their lack of female acknowledgement. In fact, back in 2018, she called out the sexism when she introduced the best director nominees by referencing the “all-male nominees.” And this year, she decided to add the names of successful female directors to her Dior cape to bring attention to their success. We love women supporting women!
- Rebel Wilson and James Cordon dressed up as cats
Everyone knows that Cats was probably one of the worst movies of the year, making it hilarious when Rebel Wilson and James Cordon came out to present the award for Best Visual Effects wearing costumes from the movie. Oh, the irony!
- Parasite makes history
The Korean film was the first non-English language movie to win the Best Picture category, as well as taking home awards in several other categories like Best International Feature Film and Best Original Screenplay.
