Buffalo is known for many things, like chicken wings, Bills Mafia, and Mighty Taco, but another key piece of the Buffalo culture is the art scene.
With the temporary closing of the well-known Albright Knox Art Gallery, you might be wondering where you should go to get your art fix. Lucky for you, I know 10 of the best art spots in the area, and I am here to share them with you!
CEPA Art Gallery
CEPA is probably the finest contemporary photographic and visual art spaces in Buffalo and is located downtown in the historic Market Arcade Complex. The gallery hosts several exhibits and events, and even offers classes and workshops to teach you anything from learning to use a camera to how to develop images in a darkroom. Plus, the gallery has several mini locations around Buffalo that are worth checking out.
Museum Mile
The Buffalo Museum Mile, which is actually more of a quarter mile, has the Burchfield Penney Art Center and the Buffalo History Museum (and the Albright Knox gallery, but is closed until 2022). The art center holds several pieces by Charles E. Burchfield and other artists from around the area. The history museum displays the area’s history and the museum’s architecture is a work of art itself. The museum grounds also host the Buffalo Japanese Garden, which is worth a look if you have never been there.
Hertel Avenue & Elmwood Avenue
Hertel Ave. and Elmwood Ave. are major artsy areas in Buffalo. Walking down their strip, you’ll see murals and public pieces all over, and they’re highly instagramable. Even driving down in the winter, you’ll see pops of color which contrast with the dreary white of winter. Plus, both strips have the cutest shops and restaurants that offer great food in a beautiful setting.
East Aurora
EA is the artsy-fartsy town of the Buffalo area, and hosts artists, galleries and history. The Main Street strip has several one-of-a-kind shops and boutiques, as well as restaurants. The town also boasts the famous and historic Roycroft Inn, which hosts arts festivals (especially in the summer).
Sugar City
The Niagara Street gallery hosts several events and galleries for the Buffalo community to enjoy. They also have live music often from local musicians. Since opening in March 2015, they have made an impact on the community by bringing a unique creative energy to the Buffalo art scene despite being fairly new.
Indigo Art
Indigo has been part of Buffalo’s art community for over a decade. The Allen Street gallery provides independent artists the chance to show their work with the community and is a great space to share creativity and meet other artists in the area. They have exhibits that change often and host several events each month.
Body of Trade & Commerce Gallery
BT&C is more apart of the underground art scene in Buffalo. Located on Niagara Street, the contemporary art gallery lives in a warehouse right next door to Resurgence Brewery. BT&C shows some of the best new up-and-coming artists from Buffalo and the surrounding areas.
Carnegie Art Center
The Carnegie Art Center provides numerous exhibits, events, and even classes to the northern areas of Buffalo. Located in North Tonawanda, the art center hosts inexpensive art showing, and art shows during the summer months.
Eleven Twenty Projects
Located on Main Street in Bryant, ETP is a modern and contemporary art gallery that focuses on history, art, and culture. They host several exhibitions each month and are even apart of the Allentown First Friday Gallery Walk, a self-guided tour of the art galleries, restaurants, and shops in the beautiful Allentown area.
Buffalo Studio Arts
BSA offers opportunities for local artists to showcase their work in a beautiful gallery. They strive to motivate and help artists develop their style and better their work. They offer exhibits, mentorships, and educational programs. They also offer affordable studio space.
